1０月の講座の資料を読み返していて、とても、気になる詩があったので、ここで紹介しておきます。

A CREED FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SUFFERED

「悩める人々への銘」

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey...

「大きなことを成し遂げるために　強さを与えてほしいと神に求
めたのに　謙遜を学ぶように　弱さを授かった」

I asked for health, that I might do greater things
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things...

「偉大なことができるようにと　健康を求めたのに
　よりよきことをするようにと　病気を賜った」

I asked for riches, that I might be happy
I was given poverty, that I might be wise...

「幸せになろうとして　富を求めたのに
　賢明であるようにと　貧困を授かった」

I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God...

「世の人々の称賛を得ようとして　力と成功を求めたのに
　得意にならないようにと　失敗を授かった」

I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things...

「人生を楽しむために　あらゆるものを求めたのに
　あらゆるものをいつくしむために　人生を授かった」

I got nothing that I asked for―but everything I had hoped for
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am among all men, most richly blessed!

「求めたものは一つとして与えられなかったが　願いはすべて
聞き届けられた　私はもっとも豊かに祝福されたのだ」
